To self-publish is to take on a major endeavor beyond getting your book edited, designed, set in type, printed, and delivered to your garage. Getting published, let alone being well published, involves having a big enough vision, creating a decent budget, producing a well-orchestrated marketing/distribution plan, having strong internal motivation, and maintaining plain old stick-to-it-ness.

The major components of the self-publisher's marketing plan are:

  • How to target appropriate distribution channels
  • Publicity strategy
  • Author travel
  • Seminar schedule
  • Special event planning
  • Promotional materials
  • Exhibiting at conferences and conventions
  • Advertising
  • The important subsidiary rights solicitations
